Progetto Darwin

(Card Game)

Each player will have to use the Action cards and Darwin cards to be able to reach 10 Survival points before the others. When a player reaches 10 points the game ends with that player being the winner.

The game ends if the Darwin deck runs out and the last player draws the Self Destruct card. In this case the player with the most points at that moment is the winner of the game. In case of a tie,
the tied players win

The Game

The Concept

We started from the idea of wanting to create a game that is simple, understandable and appreciated by all. After having discarded various concepts, we came to the idea of reproducing the Chinese morra transposed into a card game, and hence the main mechanic of Project Darwin

What was missing, however, was what made it all unique and interesting. We therefore introduced the figure of the 'Father', a sort of master mind within the game that would have influenced, through a dedicated set of cards, the outcome of the various rounds

My team and I have thought a lot about the effects of the cards in the deck, trying as much as possible to stay consistent with the lore of the game and what is simulating: a battle between androids. I personally focused on creating cards with functional effects and what the card would haved represented figuratively

The Problems

During the various play tests we realized that people loved to play the figure of the 'Father', but at the same time the other players moves would lost their meaning since the 'Father' was able to modify the outcome of the rounds anyway

We solved it by implementing 2 changes:

​

  • The 'Father' cards were changed in such a way as to limit their effects (some cards have been completely removed)

​

  • The 'Father' will no longer be just one player for the whole game but the role will turn between the players at the end of each round

 

After making these changes we continued to playtest and we got the desired results: people were enjoying the game a lot more than before
